Currently Porsche as a second hand car is enjoying a major revival both in popularity and value. The Boxsters, especially facelifts, dropped unsustainably early this year so too did the 996's. Stock is short and demand is long so residuals are...

Two Porsche Debuts at Los Angeles Show

by /

In today’s future-oriented, high-technology Cayenne Hybrid, a prototype vehicle combining superior efficiency with equally superior driving dynamics, engineers at the Porsche Research & Development Centre in Weissach, Germany, have created a 21st century development of this original concept.

The Full-Parallel-Hybrid System developed by Porsche for the Cayenne prototype combines the best of two worlds so efficiently that the series production model will achieve fuel economy of more than 30mpg, as well as lower emissions. Porsche has taken a new approach with its V6 petrol engine and battery hybrid drivetrain in developing a parallel system rather than applying the established solution which branches output along various lines and in various directions via a planetary gearset. A parallel system features the electric motor and clutch integrated within the drivetrain, and this compact layout ensures greater compatibility with all-wheel drive technology and fewer compromises in terms of interior space. Equally important attributes of the hybrid model are to maintain the ambitious standards in vehicle weight and driving dynamics, which differentiate a Porsche from its rivals.

The Cayenne Hybrid will be available to customers before the end of this decade.

Also making its US debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show will be the new Porsche 911 GT2, together with the current Porsche range.

At the same time, Porsche is also displaying an earlier milestone in automobile development at the show; the electric-drive Lohner-Porsche from over a century ago, one of the world’s first zero emission vehicles and, accordingly, a forerunner of hybrid drive.

With its forward-looking use of electric motors in the wheel hubs, the Lohner-Porsche was an absolute sensation on the occasion of its world debut at the Paris World Fair in 1900. This outstanding achievement in technology is protected today as an automotive landmark by the Technical Museum in Vienna, Austria. The trip to Los Angeles marks the first time the Lohner-Porsche will have travelled outside of Europe.

It was this vehicle that gave the 24 year-old Ferdinand Porsche his breakthrough as a pioneer in the history of the automobile. In 1901, the addition of a petrol combustion engine directly connected to an 80 volt dynamo - -providing power for the electric drive system in the front wheels - created what is acknowledged as the first car with hybrid drive, and was a unique highlight at that year’s Paris Auto Show.

Porsche Design - The Eton P9111 Emergency Radio

by /

Sure it has a cast aluminum housing and precision knurled knobs (you gotta have knurling) but besides that I don’t see much difference between this emergency radio and what’s for sale at the local Best Buy or Wal-Mart. However I also believe that looks aren’t everything and besides being powered by a hand crank the Eton P’9110 also includes an AM/FM/Shortwave radio, emergency siren, cellphone recharger and an LED flashlight.

And while such a device is a must have if you live anywhere that’s prone to power outages caused by nasty storms I don’t think the Porsche Design stylings quite justify the $200 price tag.

I’m sure at one point I was happy to hear that Porsche would be lending their design sensibilities to products other than cars but so far I haven’t exactly been blown away. While the car bearing the Porsche...

For Racers Only: 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

by /

The biggest news is that power is up by 20 over last year's Cup racer, meaning the 3.6-liter flat-six now produces a full 420 horsepower. The six-speed sequential transmission has also been optimized with new gear ratios to take better advantage of the 911 GT3 Cup's newfound power.

An entirely new rear end is also being featured on the new car, with twin air-venting slits on the engine lid that follow the production 911 GT3's design. Weight is pared down to a paltry 2,535 lbs in race trim. The 2008 911 GT3 Cup will be campaigned in numerous race series, and 26 of the record 265 examples to be built are already designated for the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, specified with a unique exhaust system and Porsche's ceramic composite brakes (PCCB). Cars racing in the worldwide Carrera Cup series will feature a modified exhaust and steel brake discs.

All 911 GT3 Cup cars are based on the production 911 GT3 model, featuring modifications necessary for racing, such as the built-in air jack system, safety equipment, special rear spoiler, center-locking wheel hubs, and 90-liter fuel tank. Deliveries of cars destined for the Carrera Cup New Zealand have already been shipped, while Porsche Mobile1 Supercup and Carrera Cup Germany contenders are scheduled for shipment in early March 2008.

Porsche Cayenne GTS

by /

The Cayenne GTS, due to be officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show, will arrive in the UK next spring. It is the first SUV to receive Porsche's electronic damping system, which is usually reserved for their sports cars. This lowers the car by 24mm, and should mean some handling improvements.

The engine has been enhanced as well, giving 405bhp at 6,500rpm from the 4.8 litre direct fuel injection V8. This means that with the six-speed manual gearbox that comes as standard, the GTS can get from 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, half a second quicker than the Cayenne S. Also standard are 21" alloy rims, 12-way adjustable sports seats, and a vehicle tracking system.

The exterior bears resemblance to the Cayenne Turbo, but there are two paint colours exclusive to the GTS: Nordic Gold Metallic and GTS Red. Prices will start at £54,350.

Aerokit by Porsche

by /

The characteristic front lip and the distinctive rear spoiler lend the typical turbo silhouette an even more dynamic appearance. The Porsche development center engineers in Weissach attached the maximum possible significance to aerodynamic functionality. The most essential objective among the components refined in the wind tunnel was to develop the handling characteristics, given an unchanged drag coefficient of 0.31 compared with the production version.

The Aerokit costs 4,500 Euro (6.500$) (excluding VAT) when ordered at the same time as purchasing a new vehicle from Porsche.

Porsche Web TV

This latest interactive site from the Stuttgart manufacturer allows Porschephiles to view official Porsche films on the company website – there is even a large-screen display option to get closer to the action.

The idea is to pool all the films about current models, technology and development, along with some classic and prize-winning footage. You can view motor-sport reports from the American Le Mans series as well as those Golden Camera Award winning films “True to yourself” and “No”. Though the PH Office must have missed these when out on our team cinema jaunts!

There is also the ability to create a customised cinema schedule or just take in the aural delights of engine sounds of the cars. The highlight of the whole site is a lap of Le Mans in 1977, which we could watch for hours.
